Serving garda sergeant guilty for sexual assault

For sexually abusing a woman in Dublin over three years ago, a serving garda sergeant was given a five-month prison term.
On March 2, 2020, Cathal Middleton, who has an address at Fforster Square in Lucan, was found guilty in district court of sexually assaulting a woman in west Dublin.
Two years after he was promoted from garda to sergeant, the assault happened at a home after a social gathering.
At Blanchardstown District Court, Judge David McHugh handed down a sentence to the 42-year-old today.
The judge ordered that the sergeant who is on suspension be listed for seven years as a sex offender as well.
The garda who is currently suspended filed an appeal right away and is out on bail.
The Garda Press Office announced in a statement this evening that a male garda assigned to the Dublin area was suspended from duty in June 2020 as a result of an inquiry into an alleged sexual assault.
Additionally, it stated that it does not comment on cases currently in court or on internal disciplinary actions involving specific people.
